Tankless water heater installation
A tankless unit heats water as you use it, so back-to-back showers stop being a problem. It only works well when it is sized for your home and the house can support it. We check both, then tell you honestly whether it makes sense.

Licensed & insuredMetro master plumbing licence15791Tankless may suit your home if
- Hot water runs out during back-to-back showers
- Your tank is getting old and you want to plan ahead
- You would like the floor space the tank takes up
- You plan to stay in the home for a good while
- You own your tank, or your rental contract lets you change it

Sizing comes down to what runs at once
A tank is sized by how much it stores. A tankless unit is sized by how much hot water it can make at one moment. So the question is what your home runs at the same time: two showers and the dishwasher ask far more of it than one shower.
Winter matters too. The water coming into a Toronto home is much colder in January, so the unit has more work to do. We size for that, not for a mild day. An undersized unit shows up as water going lukewarm when someone opens a second tap.
What may need to change in the house
Swapping a tank for a tankless unit is rarely a straight trade. We look at these before you decide:
- Venting: tankless units have their own venting needs, and the old vent may not suit.
- Gas supply: gas units can need more gas than the old tank did, so the existing line has to be checked.
- Water connections: the hot and cold lines usually need rerouting to the new location.
- Power: most units need an electrical outlet for their controls.
- Wall space and access: the unit hangs on a wall and has to be reachable for service.
When a tank is the better choice
Tankless costs more to install than a tank, so it pays off best when you plan to stay. If your home has modest hot water needs, or the venting and supply changes would be large, a new tank water heater may serve you better. We will tell you if that is the case.
If your tank is a rental
Many Toronto homes rent their water heater. The rental company owns it, so read your contract before you plan a change. Ask what ending the rental involves and who removes the old tank.
Looking after a tankless unit
Minerals in the water can build up inside the unit over time, and many units have an inlet filter that needs cleaning. Follow the schedule in the manufacturer's manual. Ask us what your model needs.
