Outdoor faucets and hose bibs
An outdoor tap can look fine in the fall and leak inside your basement wall the first time you use it in spring. We repair and replace outdoor faucets, including frost-proof models built for Toronto winters.

Licensed & insuredMetro master plumbing licence15791Call us when
- The outdoor tap drips with the handle closed
- Water leaks inside the basement when the hose is on
- The handle is stiff or will not fully close
- Flow from the tap is weak
- You want a frost-proof tap or a tap somewhere new

How to shut it off for winter
- Do it before the first hard freeze, usually around late October or early November in Toronto
- Disconnect the hose
- Close the indoor shut-off valve for the outdoor tap, if your home has one
- Open the outdoor tap to drain the line and leave it open
Can't find a separate valve? Some homes do not have one, or it is hidden behind a finished wall. Ask us. Without one, the line can stay full through the winter.
What a frost-proof hose bib does
The valve sits inside the home, several inches behind the outside wall, so water drains out of the exposed part when you close it. It only works with the hose off. A hose left on can trap water and split the pipe inside the wall.
Why outdoor taps leak
Common causes are a worn washer, a loose packing nut or damage from freezing. A leak at the spout is often a simple repair. A leak inside the basement when the tap is on often means the pipe split over the winter, and replacing the faucet is usually the fix.
Pipes near outside walls are also the most likely to freeze. See frozen pipes.
We serve homes in Etobicoke, Mississauga, North York and nearby Toronto communities.
