- The tub spout drips after the tap is off
- Water still comes from the spout when the shower is on
- There is a stain on the ceiling under the bathroom
- The stopper no longer holds water or the tub drains slowly
- The tub is cracked or you want it replaced

Leaks from a tub
A ceiling stain under a bathroom can come from a few places, and they call for different repairs:
- The valve or spout: a worn part can leak behind the wall or drip at the spout. See shower and tub faucets.
- The drain or overflow: seals can fail, so water escapes when the tub is full or draining.
- The edge of the tub: water gets past failed caulking at the wall and floor. That is often not a pipe at all.
Noticing when the leak shows up helps: only during a bath, only during a shower or all the time. If it is coming through the ceiling, stop using the tub until it is checked. See hidden leak detection.
Replacing a bathtub
A tub is one of the harder fixtures to replace, because it sits against the wall framing and the tile or surround often has to come off around it. Getting it through the house can take some planning as well. We look at the access and the plumbing behind it, then explain what is involved. Tell us about finishes when you book so we can discuss them.
Replacing the tub is also the best chance to deal with an old valve and drain, because the wall and the drain connection are open.
Want a shower instead?
If no one uses the tub, a tub-to-shower conversion may suit you better. Doing a full room? See bathroom renovations.
