What to do right now

  • Stop using water. No sinks, toilets, showers, dishwasher or washer until the line is clear.
  • Keep people and pets away from the water. Sewage carries bacteria.
  • Turn off power to wet areas if you can reach the panel safely. Never stand in water to do it.
  • Take photos for your insurance before you clean up.
  • In Toronto, call 311 to report it so the City can check its side of the sewer.

Finding the cause

A backup comes from a blockage in your line, roots or a broken pipe, or a surcharged city sewer in a storm. We clear the line, then run a camera inspection to see what caused it, so you know whether it is likely to happen again.

Stopping the next one

If the line is damaged, we explain the sewer repair options. If the city sewer backed up in a storm, a backwater valve is the usual fix.
