Lead water service replaced in Toronto's west end
West end, Toronto. Job done November 5, 2026.
A leak above the water meter turned out to be on an old lead water service. We pulled about 25 feet of new Type K copper line in underground and fitted a full port ball valve.
The problem
On October 23 the homeowner called us about water leaking from the pipe above the water meter in the basement. That pipe is where the water service from the street comes into the house.
The service was an old lead line. Rather than patch it, we booked a day to replace it.
What we did
On November 5 our crew dug down at the front walkway and at the foundation where the service enters the house.
Instead of trenching the whole way, we used a hydraulic torpedo to pull about 25 feet of new line through the ground. The new service is Type K copper, 3/4 inch.
Inside, we brought the line up through the basement floor to the water meter and fitted a full port ball valve, which opens to the full size of the pipe.
Then we backfilled the digs, using water to settle the soil.
How it ended
The lead line is out of service, and the house now takes its water through new copper. With a full size line and a full port valve, the house gets the line's full flow and pressure.
The front walkway was put back and the opening in the basement floor was patched with fresh concrete.
