When should I turn off outdoor faucets for the season?
You should turn off outdoor faucets in mid to late fall, well before the first expected hard freeze, which in Toronto typically occurs in late October or early November. Begin by locating the indoor shut-off valve that controls the outdoor faucet. Turn off the valve, then go outside and open the faucet to let any remaining water drain out. Leave it open over the winter to prevent pressure buildup. If your home does not have a dedicated shut-off for exterior taps, we strongly recommend having one installed. This allows you to fully isolate and protect the outdoor plumbing line. Properly shutting off and draining your outdoor plumbing helps prevent pipe bursts behind the wall, which can cause expensive damage and be difficult to detect until it is too late.
