How can I protect my pipes during extreme cold weather?

During extreme cold, pipes are at higher risk of freezing, especially those located near exterior walls, in attics, or in unheated areas. To protect them, keep cabinet doors open under sinks to allow warm air to circulate. Maintain a consistent indoor temperature, even when you are away, and consider letting a trickle of water run overnight through faucets connected to vulnerable pipes. If temperatures drop well below freezing, use space heaters in poorly insulated areas or install heat cables for critical pipes. We also recommend checking that all exterior foundation vents are closed and that your basement or crawl space is sealed properly. If a pipe does freeze, shut off the main water valve immediately and call a plumber. Thawing pipes without proper knowledge can lead to ruptures.
